Are Free Background Check Sites Actually Free? We Tested 12 of Them

We tested 12 sites that claim to offer free background checks. Here's what we actually found — and what they're not telling you.

Dozens of websites claim to offer free background checks. We tested 12 of the most popular ones to find out what they actually deliver — and what the hidden costs and limitations are.

What 'Free' Usually Means

In our testing, 'free' almost always meant a partial result — typically just a name confirmation and state of residence. To see criminal records, addresses, or contact information, every site we tested required a paid subscription or per-report fee. The 'free' label is effectively a lead generation tactic.

The Best Genuinely Free Options

True free background check data exists in government sources: state sex offender registries, court record portals, and county assessor databases. These are free but require knowing which jurisdiction to search and navigating bureaucratic interfaces. They're not practical for comprehensive checks.

The Hidden Costs

Several sites we tested used dark patterns — showing a 'free' result page that required account creation, then revealing a paywall only after you'd entered your search subject's information. Two sites auto-enrolled us in recurring subscriptions after a 'free trial' without clear disclosure.

Our Recommendation

If you need a real background check, pay for a reputable service. The cost of a monthly subscription ($13–$35) is trivial compared to the risk of making a decision based on incomplete free data. BeenVerified's 5-day trial for $1.99 is the most honest 'low-cost entry' option we found.
